Listening to this, I understand the report given by Saint Vladimir's emissaries regarding the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, which they attended for the first time in Constantinople: "we knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth". Granted, Tschaikovsky's Op. 41 was completed 890 years after the baptism of Russia. But to listen to this performance is to have an inkling of what they experienced. The performance of the Kiev Chamber Choir here is up to their usual high standard, and the recording itself is both clear and resonant.

Liturgy of St. 1 (Tchaikovsky, Pyotr). M. The Maid of Orleans (Tchaikovsky, Pyotr).
