Some Skunk Funk is a live big band record that finds brothers Randy and Michael putting my question to pleasant rest. Playing mostly BBB repertoire - but supplemented by the roaring power of the WDR Big Band in front of a Koln, Germany audience - the brothers demonstrate that their music was (or at least could be) something very much like the real thing. Trumpeter Randy Brecker is no slouch either. He's a nice soloist, tart and smart and probing, but much more anonymous than his brother. As Koaosaeme, Ryu Yoshizawa releases his second album of baffling, futuristic sound design that's bold, intense, and unpredictable.

Trumpeter Randy Brecker and tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker take many fiery solos while also sounding warm on ballads. They are supported by a particularly strong rhythm section. In addition, the WDR Big Band contributes 14 horns and a guitar to accompany the core group. The individual songs may not be overly memorable (although "Some Skunk Funk" has been getting covered by other musicians) but the Breckers' solos are full of exciting moments.
