Production was handled by Ethan Kath, with additional production by Jacknife Lee. Produced entirely by Ethan Kath, III was recorded in Berlin and Warsaw, and mixed in London. The album addresses the theme of oppression, with the musicians using different pedals and keyboards to create a diverse "palette of sound".

III) is Crystal Castles' 3rd full-length album, released in November 13, 2012. The lead single, Plague was released in July 25, 2012. Followed by Wrath of God in September 26, 2012 and Affection in October 31, 2012. It’s the last album with the participation of lead singer Alice Glass. The album cover features a picture by Spanish-born Catalan photojournalist and photographer Samuel Aranda. The image depicts a woman named Fatima al-Qaws holding her son, Zayed, who was exposed to tear gas during a street demonstration in Sana'a, Yemen, on October 15, 2011.

Every new album Crystal Castles releases is lacking one thing: a name. Each self-titled entry is instead branded with a number-a good choice, considering each feels like a chapter in the same book, rather than a new novel itself. The experimental electronica Canadian duo returns with (III), a 12-track album packed with impossibly catchy beats. In an effort to create a new sound, the band has traded in instruments used in previous albums, opting for new keyboards and pedals.
