Richard Bales ‎– The Confederacy. Label: Columbia Masterworks ‎– SL 220. Format: Vinyl, LP, Album. Hardback book with 32 pages or photographs and writing, plus one lp sleeve. Writings from Bruce Catton, Clifford Dowdey, and Richard Bales. Matrix, Runout (Side A - Runout): XLP30158-1C.

This album was considered a prime collector's item for many years, and was reissued on CD by Sony Music Special Products in a handsome box, with its artwork and booklet intact in 1991, in the wake of the success of Ken Burns' Civil War series on PBS and the latter's accompanying soundtrack. It does offer the variety of sounds and settings of the latter, or the touching and intimate moments, but it is still a wonderful collection of historical music of great import and melodic allure and, in some quarters (even in 2010), contextual appeal.

Civil War 1: The Confederacy. A. Civil War 1: The Confederacy. Best Engineered Recording, Non Classical.

Given the Confederacy's limited resources compared with the Union, Davis decided that the Confederacy would have to fight mostly on the strategic defensive. However, when the Mississippi River flooded in spring 1867, it also changed course, ruining many acres and creating "Davis Island". After Joseph Davis died two years later, his 1869 will left property to his two orphaned grandchildren, as well as to his brother's children, and named Jefferson Davis one of three executors (with Dr. J. H. D. Bowmar and nephew Joseph Smith).

This item reveals the Confederacy in a way and with an emotion that no mere book or collection of photographs ever could from 1066781536. It includes a heavy vinyl LP recording of the music of the confederacy that was wonderfully produced, conducted and recorded at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, . This item is inscribed by its Composer Richard Bales "With best wishes to Claude Bonbrist, and kind rememberances of May 9, 1955!" Richard Bales composed and conducted the recording, which accompanies a 32-page, hardbound collection of photographs and essays printed on heavy, glossy-archival quality paper. The introduction is written by Goddard Liberson
