Bleach is the debut studio album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on June 15, 1989 by Sub Pop. The main recording sessions took place at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, Washington between December 1988 and January 1989. Bleach failed to chart upon its original release, but was well received by critics. The album was re-released internationally by Geffen Records in 1992 following the success of Nirvana's second album, Nevermind (1991).

Nirvana’s line-up in 1989 consisted of guitarist Kurdt Cobain, bassist Chris Novoselic and main drummer Chad Channing, although some songs feature Dale Crover of Melvins-fame on drums. Nirvana’s 1989 debut album lived almost exclusively in the underground Seattle circuit until it was plucked out of obscurity following Nirvana’s breakthrough in 1991. This early album is more raw than Nevermind, heavier than In Utero, and features a greater metal influence than Nirvana’s later work.

He reportedly had listened to Bleach and returned it to a friend feeling that the cover was inferior. Even Cobain had his issues with the song, stating in an interview with NME, "I wish we could have recorded it a lot heavier. It was one of our first recordings. Though the album initially failed to chart, it was solid enough to start the word of mouth rolling on the band. Though not heavily promoted, Bleach was a pretty steady seller for Sub Pop and got the recognition it deserved when the label re-released it in 1992 after Nirvana's meteoric rise with Nevermind. This time around, the disc hopped onto the Billboard 200 chart at No. 89.
