Nicholas Tremulis has been hanging tough since the mid-80s. But between a new 'XRT show and his 52 Reasons Project, he's got a few new outlets. Tremulis eventually signed with Island Records, which released his 1985 self-titled debut and 1989's More Than the Truth, but both albums were crippled by the effects-heavy, inorganic aesthetic of their time. They've haunted me ever since. When Island head Chris Blackwell sold the label to Polygram in 1989, Tremulis opted out of his contract and decamped to New Orleans.

Napoleon, the new album from the Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra, seamlessly travels through the rock concert hall, soul dance party, Crescent City fete, late night jazz lounge, rollicking blues bar, and sharp-witted poetry slam. And all with a popular rock'n'roll vision that rests on a foundation of the finest musical traditions. Two albums of powerhouse R&B followed, 1987's Nicholas Tremulis and More Than The Truth two years later, featuring such stellar guests as Raitt, Parker, Ivan Neville and blues harmonica legend Sugar Blue. Tremulis pared down to a small combo for an indie EP featuring Corso, King Of The Hill, and an album collaboration with the poet, Bloody Show.

Formed in 1982, the first incarnation of Nicholas Tremulis was described as “Punk Jazz”, drawing on early punk music, as well as James Brown funk and the harmolodic jazz movement of Ornette Coleman. A single was released on Disturbing Records in 1983 produced by Craig Williams. The album features guest artists, Alejandro Escovedo and Ivan Neville. NTO also contributed a version of Escovedo’s “Velvet Guitar” for the tribute/relief record “Por Vida”, on Or Music. This is also produced by Rob Fraboni.

Born in 1960 to a jazz piano-playing father and a blues-singing mother, Tremulis grew up in the city's Greektown and in suburban Northbrook. Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, signed the band to his label in the mid-'80s, releasing two LPs: The Nicholas Tremulis Band (1985) and More Than the Truth (1988). Asking for a contractual release from Island, Tremulis trimmed down the number of members in his band and released an EP, King of the Hill on Monsterdisc, and the LP Bloody Show on rock group Shoes' label, Black Vinyl. In more recent times, Tremulis toured Europe, backed blues musicians on guitar, and started doing jingle work.
