102/2, might be regarded as having inaugurated Beethoven's late period. Cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and pianist Alexander Melnikov (here playing a modern piano unlike on the trio recording the pair made with violinist Isabelle Faust) have an efficient, quick, tough style that beautifully fits these late sonatas. They do well in the two sonatas of Op. 5, not trying to impose an artificial shape on what must have been at the time shockingly long opening movements. The Cello Sonata No. 3 in A major, Op.

Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven: Complete Works for Violoncello and Piano. Cellist Queyras has made a very cheerful Beethoven cello album together with Alexander Melnikov. The recording delivers a clear, finely mixed tone, and the duo play with great transparency and precision, while always striking the right tone. The two approach their goals together, and their phrasing is based on clear ideas.

Jean-Guihen Queyras (cello), Alexander Melnikov (piano) (Harmonia Mundi). His partnership with the Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov is an ideal match: both are sensitive, responsive chamber musicians, alert to colour and detail, never excessive. The three sets of cello-piano variations, on two Mozart arias and Handel’s See, the Conqu’ring Hero Comes! (Judas Maccabaeus), are sparkling but perhaps more fun for players than listener. The plums here are the five sonatas, growing in majesty and complexity and spanning the composer’s life from the early Op 5 No 1 to Op 102 No 2, in all its late glory. Ludwig van Beethoven.

Beethoven’s works for cello and piano were written between 1796 and 1815. He in effect created the sonata for cello with an independent piano part in his o., intended for Jean-Louis Duport and dedicated to Frederick William II of Prussia; like the delightful variations on themes by Handel and Mozart, they represent his first-period style, as O. 9 typifies the second. The two sublime Sonatas o. 02, for their part, already herald the unprecedented stylistic freedom of the composer’s final decade. Les œuvres pour piano et violoncelle de Beethoven s’étalent entre 1796 et 1815. Alexander Melnikov Jean-Guihen Queyras.
