It seemed like a symbolic act: when Daniel Barenboim had the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra play a second encore at the 2015 Summer Festival, he ceded his place and asked his assistant – Lahav Shani – to step up to the podium. The passing of the baton between generations, which was then a foregone conclusion, has now taken place. This year the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, which was founded in 1918, celebrates its 100th anniversary. Initially it comprised musicians who made music together purely for their own pleasure; but starting in 1930, when Eduard Flipse took on leadership, it became professionalized and began its ascent to one of the leading orchestras of the Netherlands.
