I will focuse on symphony no. 9 only: Eugen Jochum has recorded live this supreme work several times and, according to my knowledge, three times in studio: the first time in 1954 with the Symphonieorchester der Bayerischen Rundfunks (mono recording), then in 1966 with the Berliner Philharmoniker and finally this one in January 1978 with the Staatskapelle Dresden. Both the latest versions are quite similar in tempos but significantly different in the orchestral sound: the 1966 version, thanks to the supreme Berliner strings, is very polished, solemn and monumental, particularly in the Adagio

of Anton Bruckner and made the first recording of it. Jochum's first post was as a rehearsal pianist at Mönchen-Gladbach, and then in Kiel. He made his conducting debut with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in 1926 in a program which included Bruckner's Seventh Symphony  . He later worked regularly with the Staatskapelle Dresden, with which he recorded the complete symphonies of Bruckner and "London" symphonies of Joseph Haydn (which latter he also recorded with the London Philharmonic).
