Jochum's first post was as a rehearsal pianist at Mönchen-Gladbach, and then in Kiel. He made his conducting debut with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in 1926 in a program which included Bruckner's Seventh Symphony After Kiel he went to Mannheim, where Wilhelm Furtwängler praised his conducting. He later worked regularly with the Staatskapelle Dresden, with which he recorded the complete symphonies of Bruckner and "London" symphonies of Joseph Haydn (which latter he also recorded with the London Philharmonic). He appeared regularly at the Salzburg Festival.

This is the 2nd, and final recorded cycle of the Bruckner nine symphonies by Eugen Jochum (1902-1987), recorded 1975-1980 for EMI, and re-released here by Warner Classics. Jochum recorded these same works with the Berlin Philharmonic and Bavarian Radio Orchestra for Deutsche Grammophone, 1957-1965. Some listeners and critics prefer the earlier DG Jochum Bruckners; others prefer this later cycle, with the Dresden State Orchestra, one of the finest in Germany. These recordings are analogue, but excellent stereo sound

The Staatskapelle Dresden names former Principal Conductor of long standing, Herbert Blomstedt, as their Conductor Laureate in recognition of his unique contribution to the orchestra. 2011 Staatskapelle Dresden to become orchestra for the Salzburg Easter Festival, and Christian Thielemann the festival’s Artistic Director. From 2013 the Staatskapelle Dresden will be the festival orchestra for the Salzburg Easter Festival.
