One World is a 1977 album by John Martyn. One of his more experimental works, it features atmospheric, reggae influenced rhythms and free-flowing, jazzy arrangements. Acclaimed for its collaborative spirit, the album includes contributions from Lee Perry on "Big Muff", and Steve Winwood (keyboards). The album is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die by Robert Dimery.

Martyn's first two albums London Conversations and The Tumbler are about as straight folk and folk rock as you can get and were both recorded under Joe Boyd's tutelage, and it is through him he met singer Beverly Kutner. She would quickly become Mrs Martyn and they recorded together two albums, which are essential in Martyn's instrumental progression. Both Stormbringer and Road To Ruin have their own duo charm, but also hold the first hints of the future soundscape of John Martyn. Ending his musical partnership with Beverley (she'd still write a few lyrics and make the odd.

1973 was a remarkable year for music, but few had a greater annus mirabilis than folk alchemist JOHN MARTYN who devoted the year to the crafting of two strange masterpieces. On the 40th anniversary of Solid Air, MAT SNOW speaks to friends, fellow travellers and bruised survivors to discover the pain, power, joy and sadness behind a master musician’s quest for freedom. Just off the top of your head, 1973 was a vintage year for the album. And then there’s Solid Air by John Martyn. Released exactly 40 years ago, here was a platter to warm the cockles of the college circuit cognoscenti, a dope-head’s delight which bottled a moment; a moment which then faded with its generation to become a period piece with only the faintest afterlife beyond its particular time and place.

JOHN MARTYN – ONE WORLD (Island, 1977) Inspired by a sabbatical at label boss Chris Blackwell’s home in Jamaica, the dub inflections of One World saw Martyn hit a chord during the height of punk. Boasting an all-star cast (Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Steve Winwood) and recorded in a fug of narcotics, it pleased the critics (NME called it mean, moody and magnificen. ust plain better than everything else ) and inspired everyone from Jah Wobble to Massive Attack. One World is still one of my favourites. Musically speaking I was really pleased with it. I knew that I’d moved on.
