Old '60s and '70s soul, soul-jazz, and funk samples abound, and the music is dotted with gauzy keyboard washes, hugely echoed bass-drum kicks, milky basslines, and muted horn loops, almost sounding like they are emanating out of water. All of the songs feel immediate, yet they are infused with the sort of roomy ambience that lends to each the impression of a classic tune, evocative of an earlier era, but not one that can be described exactly, and not one to which you can definitively point.

Soul music combines traditional American gospel and rhythm & blues (R&B) style, collecting catchy hooks, heavy improvisation and a tense vocal sound. The music has become synonymous around the world with "funk" as well as deep emotional expression. Top soul artists include Ray Charles, James Brown (known as the "Godfather of Soul"), Sam Cooke, Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin and Etta James. Those blue eyes are prominently on display in the still imagery KFC had whipped up for the announcement. And indeed, that still imagery is all you'll see of Kartheiser in the spot below-which casts Nashville Hot Chicken as an illicit temptation to teens, akin to rock 'n' roll in the 1950s. The teen in the spot is seen fawning not only over the food by also over a vinyl record by the apparently musically inclined Nashville Colonel.
