Pete Rock’s multi-layered, horns-filled, bass-heavy boom bap production is simply masterful. CL Smooth delivery serves as another instrument to complete the musical feast this album is from start to finish. Incredibly consistent throughout, Mecca And The Soul Brother is one of Hip Hop’s all-time greatest albums. Top tracks: They Reminisce Over You (. Was there ever a more influential album in Hip Hop? Another 1992 masterpiece that, like the no. 1 on this list, is about the production first and the lyrical content second. Dr Dre‘s production on this album is just INCREDIBLE. Often imitated, never duplicated. It also showed us the full potential of Hip Hop’s next superstar – a young Snoop Dogg.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, ‘Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel’. Non-album single, 1981. Using three turntables and a crossfader (a device he invented), 23-year-old Flash created a continuous party jam out of records by Chic, Blondie, Queen and more – showing off frenetic steel-wheels moves and establishing the DJ as a new kind of pop musician. Funky 4 + 1, ‘That’s the Joint’. Non-album single, 1980. Nearly 10 minutes and God knows how many bars of exhortations and boasts, sprawling across a hopped-up disco beat. Doug Wimbish’s bass breakdown is as funky as anything this side of Bootsy Collins. But the real star of the show is the Funky Four’s plus-one woman, Sha-Rock (. Sharon Green), the first female MC featured on a hit rap record.

The album’s secret weapon comes in the not-so-subtle touch of ordained punk saint Steve Albini, whose crisp, low-end touch forces the crushers to flatten and the gentler songs to ring bell clear. The hour-long album, a compendium of 16 highlights from King Khan and the Shrines’ discography, is full of upbeat garage-rock jams, from the groovy Sweet Touch to the swinging Outta Harms Way. Toronto-born Arish Khan, a confident, swaggering frontman, belts out each song like a bar-band hero working overtime.
Grandmaster Flash (born Joseph Saddler) not only devised various techniques but also designed turntable and mixing equipment. Formed in the South Bronx, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were one of the first rap posses, responsible for such masterpieces as The Message, Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel and White Lines. The combination of Grandmaster Flash’s turntable mastery and the Furious Five’s raps, which ranged from socially conscious to frivolously fun, made for a series of 12-inch records that forever altered the musical landscape . The result was another album, On the Strength, released in 1988.
Dylan took rock lyrics to places they hadn’t been before and haven’t been since. He remains the nonpareil avatar of pure artistry with all its peevish, unadulterated glory - and missteps, stumbles, and exasperations. Blood on the Tracks is the best rock album ever made. 19. The group didn't have any Italian releases until 1985, by which time the non-album single "Step Off" had been a hit in Europe, so the title Step Off was given to a slight variation of the album, with the lead track replaced and a past hit included.
