Walter Gieseking remains the undisputed high priest of French impressionistic piano music. True, recording technology has progressed since his time. This matters little, though, since the most outstanding aspect of his interpretations is the way he brings in rests. Gieseking understood this perfectly. By the way, he also recorded the complete piano solo works of Mozart. This set is also a must-have. Its only problem is that there is too little of a good thing.

Walter Gieseking In 1998 an article appeared in The Times claiming the non-existence of talent. Gieseking’s repertoire was immense (he gave a New York recital in 1930 devoted entirely to contemporary music) and he recorded the complete solo piano music of Mozart (1953–54) and Ravel (1954) and virtually the complete solo works of Debussy (1951–54). His Mozart has been criticised for its small-scale or miniaturist view, but his Debussy has never been surpassed. A project to record all the Beethoven sonatas and much of Schubert’s piano music was left incomplete when, aged only 60, Gieseking died suddenly in October 1956.

Walter Wilhelm Gieseking (5 November 1895 – 26 October 1956) was a French-born German pianist and composer. Born in Lyon, France, the son of a German doctor and lepidopterist, Gieseking first started playing the piano at the age of four, but without formal instruction. His family travelled frequently and he was privately educated. From 1911 to early 1916, he studied at the Hanover Conservatory. There his mentor was the director Karl Leimer, with whom he later co-authored a piano method
