Edwin Olin Downes, better known as Olin Downes (January 27, 1886 – August 22, 1955), was an American music critic, known as "Sibelius's Apostle" for his championship of the music of Jean Sibelius. As critic of The New York Times, he exercised considerable influence on musical opinion, although many of his judgments have not stood the test of time

The Lure of Music book. Details (if other): Cancel. Thanks for telling us about the problem.

The most conspicuous of Downes's topics was the music of Sibelius, about which he wrote admiringly as early as 1907 He met the composer during the latter's visit to the US in 1914 After becoming critic of The New York Times, Downes sought to counter the prevailing enthusiasm for the music of Stravinsky by inviting Sibelius to make another visit to.

Olin Downes was born on June 27, 1886 in Evanston, Illinois, USA as Edwin Olin Downes. He was deeply offended that the Disney artists had chosen to illustrate Beethoven's music by showing centaurs and centaurettes flirting and Bacchus the wine god cavorting drunkenly. Both his first wife and widow survived him, along with three children from his first marriage: Edward . Downes ; Mrs. George Rockwell Smith of Concord, . Mrs. Richard Williams III of New York; and four grandchildren. Also surviving, two sisters: Mrs. Charles Cutler of Newtonville, Mass. and and Mrs. Theodore Behre of New Orleans.

Olin Downes (Edwin) (January 27, 1886–August 22, 1955) was an American music critic. He studied piano, music theory, and music criticism in New York and Boston, and it was in those two cities that he made his career as a music critic-first with the Boston Post (1906–1924) and then with the New York Times (1924–1955). He was also known in radio broadcasting for his contributions to an intermission feature during the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts, "The Metropolitan Opera Quiz. Occasionally, he appeared as a guest lecturer at universities and music conservatories. Seattle: University of Washington Press. In The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, ed. Stanley Sadie.

Olin Downes played a key role in establishing Sibelius's reputation as a Romantic composer fated to live in the wrong century. Few composers in the history of music have had so ardent a champion as Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) had in Olin Downes (1886-1955), the highly influential music critic for the New York Times. The evangelical zeal with which Downes promoted the work of Sibelius to the American people transformed the Finnish composer into an immensely popular figure in American musical culture.

Hanging Out. In Love.
