George Szell, Sir John Barbirolli, Karel Ančerl, Hans Knappertsbusch, Sergiu Celibidache, Sir Thomas Beecham, Vladimir Delman, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Hermann Scherchen, Wilhelm Furtwängler - Great Conductors 10 CD-Set ‎(10xCD, Comp).

George Szell, Sir John Barbirolli, Karel Ančerl, Hans Knappertsbusch, Sergiu Celibidache, Sir Thomas Beecham, Vladimir Delman, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Hermann Scherchen, Wilhelm Furtwängler.

Sir John Barbirolli, CH (2 December 1899 – 29 July 1970), né Giovanni Battista Barbirolli, was a British conductor and cellist. He is remembered above all as conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, which he helped save from dissolution in 1943 and conducted for the rest of his life. Earlier in his career he was Arturo Toscanini's successor as music director of the New York Philharmonic, serving from 1936 to 1943

Furtwängler gave all his fees to German emigrants during his concerts outside Germany. The German literary scholar Hans Mayer was one of these emigrants. Mayer later observed that for performances of Wagner operas in Paris prior to the war, Furtwängler cast only German emigrants (Jews or political opponents to the third Reich) to sing. Georg Gerullis, a director at the Ministry of Culture remarked in a letter to Goebbels, "Can you name me a Jew on whose behalf Furtwängler has not intervened?". After being harassed for a period of two years, she moved to London when she became Sir Thomas Beecham's main assistant. In the book she wrote on Furtwängler in England in 1943, she said: Furtwängler, although he had decided to remain in Germany, was certainly no Nazi

We are treated to the delightful Sir Thomas Beecham, who was ready to perform after two rehearsals; the calm motions of Richard Strauss; the absolute precision of Arturo Toscanini, who wields his baton with the same total control that he expected of the NBC Symphony Orchestra's musicians; the "stick technician Fritz Reiner, who seems to make his wishes known with his eyes

Adrian Boult, Ansermet, Barbirolli, Beecham, Bernstein, Bruno Walter, Celibidache, Charles Munch, Clemens Krauss, de Sabata, Dorati, Erich Kleiber, Frederic Stock, Fricsay, Fritz Reiner, Furtwängler, Henry Wood, Jochum, Karajan, Karl Bohm, Klemperer, Knappertsbusch, Kondrashin, Koussevitzky, Kubelik, Mengelberg, Mitropoulos, Monteux, Ormandy, Rodzinski, Rosbaud, Sargent, Scherchen, Schuricht, Steinberg, Stokowski, Szell, Talich, Toscanini, Weingartner.

Romanian-born and Berlin-trained Celibidache pursued an unusual career, largely due to his refusal to make any commercial recordings. Since his death, numerous radio broadcasts have been issued commercially. Sir Georg Solti was one of the most respected and – through his ground-breaking recordings with producer John Culshaw – influential conductors of the 20th century. A pupil of Bartók, Weiner and Dohnányi in Budapest, Solti worked with Toscanini in Salzburg. He headed the opera in Frankfurt before taking over the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Already one of Europe’s leading conductors, Szell took over the Ohio orchestra in 1946 and, until his death in 1970, made a series of outstanding recordings of the core repertoire. He was also an admired guest conductor (both in concert and in the studio). Michael Tilson Thomas.

I wish I could squeeze Sir Thomas Beecham and Andre Previn in but as ten is the limit, they are jet out. As for part 2, for the most part I would be happy but I would find myself missing certain individual symphonic recordings. Luckily, Bernstein, Fricsay and Klemperer cover many of the Opera's I love and Furtwangler has Wagner well in hand. Wilhelm Furtwängler
