So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes is the seventh studio album by the American punk rock band NOFX. It was released on November 11, 1997 through Epitaph Records. The band often find themselves bombarded by footwear while performing live, as it is common practice of punk rock fans to throw shoes lost by crowd surfers on stage. From this, and the title of the fourth book of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, comes the record's title.

Fat Mike's band NOFX, along with many other well-known punk artists including Alkaline Trio, Green Day and Jello Biafra, embarked on a tour of American college campuses in the months leading up to the 2004 presidential election. Mike hoped to go beyond just protest and actually educate kids about why they should vote against Bush. So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes. BYO Split Series Volume III.

So Long & Thanks for All the Shoes finds NOFX sliding away from their strengths and turning out a nearly undistinguished collection of rote, by-the-books latter-day punk. Part of the problem is the flat, processed sound of the album, which simply fails to capture the group's fiery, energetic stage presence. That alone would make So Long a disappointment, but the songs themselves are below par, riding on tired riffs and half-baked lyrics, which tend to be buried in the mix anyway

NOFX starts out the album with a bang. Melvin pumps out some heavily distorted power chords in the intro, quickly to be joined by the rest of the band. Not much changes instrumentally as Fat Mike expresses his desire for punk rock to stay in the underground. Feedback takes us into the next track. A rather short song at 1:20, but still a highlight.
