Ironically, the Windham Hill sampler series by various artists were regulars on the Billboard Pop Album chart. The samplers were made from demo tapes sent to Windham Hill. They started out as in-store and radio promotional pieces but became standard releases. These were China, In Concert and Seasons. Prior to the sale to PolyGram in 1989, A&M Records and its affiliates product were distributed by BMG.

Windham Hill Sampler '84" (8 songs; 43 mi. starts off with now-classic Michael Hedges' "Areal Boundaries" (from the album of the same name). Next comes the 7+ min. epic "On the Threshold of Liberty" from Mark Isham's best ever album "Vapour Drawings". Windham Hill label founder and CEO Will Ackerman contributes "Ventana" from his "Past Light" album (one of his best albums), and the first half concludes with George Winston's "Thanksgiving" from his classic "December" album

The popular and pioneering new age label Windham Hill comes along to stake its claim in the somewhat hazy style known as chill-out, a stylistic trend that commonly goes hand in hand with slow hip-hop beats, breathy female vocals, and cozy atmospheric touches. Windham Hill Chill: Ambient Acoustic features material with a similar desired effect that doesn't have very much in common with chill-out.
