Following the philosophical single The Ebb & Flow The Come & Go The To & Fro", the album Song (Bar/None, 1999) further reduced the pace, plunging in a serene slumber. Tickled by accordion, trombone, vibraphone, flugelhorn, clarinet and so on, the music drifts rather than erupt. Expand Contract is a ghostly ode ("Can you tell me what is real?"), reminiscent of Japanese folk and of baroque concerts, that introduces the album's crowd of disoriented humans. Trombone and a lazy pace lend Asleep on the Subway a bluesy, cocktail-lounge feeling. The short Non Serviam sounds like a church anthem, thanks to funereal organ and a hushed litany.

To make the band complete, AJ Mogis (bass) and Shane Aspegren (drums) joined Lullaby for the Working Class and shortly thereafter the band inked a deal with Bar-None Records while making themselves noticed at various gigs in and around . specifically at the CMJ Music Festival. Their 1996 debut Blanket Warm was critically acclaimed, making ways for fellow Nebraska bands (Commander Venus, Norman Baylor, We'd Rather Be Flying) to venture outside the cornhusker state. A sophomore effort I Never Even Asked for Light followed in 1997 and Song was released two years later.

Roz Kaveney places the poem in the context of Auden’s life and times. For both him and Isherwood, it was a way of being close to the working-class young men with whom he felt in political sympathy, especially when they were German ('to Christopher, Berlin meant boys') – having sex with them was a way of rejecting fascism, with its culture of violently moralistic institutional homophobia. It hopes for the lover to be content with the mortal world rather than that of the mystics or the 'fashionable madmen' (l. 24) – a reference to the political realm of totalitarian ideology.

An old women she just told me this is the lonliest life she has ever seen every wrinkle is a monument meant for dust and decay the painter understood this spreading the evening sky with crows the sky all black placenta its too big to ignore.
