Paul Creston (born Giuseppe Guttoveggio; October 10, 1906 – August 24, 1985) was an Italian American composer of classical music. Born in New York City to Sicilian immigrants, Creston was self-taught as a composer. He was an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity, initiated into the national honorary Alpha Alpha chapter. His work tends to be fairly conservative in style, with a strong rhythmic element
Portrait of a Lady (or Portrait of a Woman) is a small oil-on-oak panel painting executed around 1460 by the Netherlandish painter Rogier van der Weyden. The composition is built from the geometric shapes that form the lines of the woman's veil, neckline, face, and arms, and by the fall of the light that illuminates her face and headdress. The vivid contrasts of darkness and light enhance the almost unnatural beauty and Gothic elegance of the model.

James twins her American sensibilities with an understanding that the world is already moving in the new directions that will make it the modern world and so constructs a woman who, despite the more conventional aspects of her life, is clearly subversive. Isabel is subversive in ways even she does not intend or fully understand, in part because of her will toward independence.

Paul Creston was one of the more popular American "classical" composers of the 1950's and early 1960's. An American success story - he had to quit school at 15 to help his family, he was primarily although not exclusively a self-taught composer. He was a recipient of many awards and composed many works. He also held faculty positions before his music was not seen as relevant by those championing atonal and 12 tone music. My specific interest was the Partita for Flute, Violin and Strings.
