A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die truly delivers what it promises: simple, direct, roots-flavored early . Anyway, we rehearsed it for about 2 to 3 weeks and then recorded it in two days. The Flesh Eaters initially broke up in 1983. However, a greatest hits album entitled Destroyed by Fire was released by SST Records in 1987 and a live album called Flesh Eaters Live was released on Homestead Records in 1988. Desjardins performed with his new band, the Divine Horsemen until 1988. No Questions Asked (1980). Forever Came Today (1982). Not bad for a laff Track listing. The album was influenced by the death of Cervenkas elder sister Mirielle in a 1980 automobile accident. Three songs on the album all directly related to the tragedy, a fourth, a high-speed version of Al Dubin and Joe Burkes Dancing With Tears in My Eyes, was, years later, indirectly attributed to Cervenkas mournful state of mind. The stark black-and-white cover art and title were also a reflection of the mood of the band during this time.

Byron Coley proclaims this the best rock record ever recorded in his liner notes to this latest re-release of the Flesh Eaters’ A Minute to Pray a Second to Die. It’s a ballsy claim, but this is a ballsy album that has certainly earned a place within such ongoing arguments. The version of the band that recorded A Minute to Pray A Second to Die was made up of an assortment of Chris . s friends from among some of the best regarded . bands of the time: John Doe and DJ Bonebrake of X, Dave Alvin and Bill Bateman of the Blasters, and Steve Berlin of the Rhythm Pigs (and later.

This line-up of The Flesh Eaters came together in 1981 in the midst of what's now looked back on as the "Roots Punk Revival. Legendary SoCal bands X, The Blasters, and Los Lobos were all exploring the music they grew up with - and so were many of their contemporaries, including The Gun Club, Top Jimmy & the Rhythm Pigs, and The Cramps. Slash Records, the fanzine turned label, was producing the debut albums of X and the Blasters. Lead singer Chris Desjardins, a Slash employee, was put in charge of the label's subsidiary, Ruby Records. Desjardins is also a pop culture historian, and an expert in Japanese gangster films. Here's one of his lines from "A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die," a good one for Halloween: Half of my kingdom is about to disappear, sinking with no mercy in a glassful of beer. The clip joint boss bolted bronze to human lips, but he made out the words, "I can still feel Jesus' kiss".
