Complete your Hopeton Lewis, Baba Brooks collection. So, Hopeton Lewis went on this rhythm track first, eh? Who'd have thought. But big props to John Holt who made this rhythm the legend it is today, even though the lyrics were way out!! And the dub of "Ali Baba" here is lifted off the "Treasure Isle Dub". So it HAS been released before, just not on a 7". Reply Notify me Helpful. referencing Live It Up, Ali Baba, Dub, 7", Ltd, THB7015

Hopeton Lewis grew up in Burnt Savannah, Westmoreland. At the age of 6, while attending the Burnt Savannah Holiness Church, his talent for singing was discovered. This ushered in the beginning of his singing career. Several years later, he returned to Kingston to live with his grandparents in Mountain View Avenue. While attending the Windward Road Primary School, he was awarded a scholarship to attend Camperdown High School. By the time he turned 15 years old, both grandparents died and he was left to fend for himself. Further tracks recorded at the same sessions, and rush-released for Hopeton Lewis’ first album, included the sound-boy boasts of Sounds & Pressure (the infectious ridim of which was revived for Sugar Minott’s Hard Time Pressure ) and A Deh Pon Dem ; the first herb song ever recorded in Jamaica, Cool Collie ; a couple of nods to US Soul in Music Got Soul.

When the NYC ska scene germinated in parallel to the UK Two-Tone movement, the Max's Kansas City club was at the heart of it. The clubs pioneering record label, run by Max's booker Peter Crowley, recorded a number of sessions in 1980, including with legendary Skatalites founder Roland Alfonso. But only two 7 singles, by San Francisco's The Offs and NYC's The Terrorists, ever got issued, prior to the label folding.
