The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played music influenced by classical, cool jazz, blues and bebop. For most of its history the Quartet consisted of John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The group grew out of the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie's big band from 1946 to 1948, which consisted of Lewis and Jackson along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke.

The Modern Jazz Quartet. Biography by Scott Yanow. All-star small jazz band whose music was sophisticated and immaculately played, marked by Milt Jackson's cool vibes.

5 Modern Jazz Quartet albums originally on Atlantic - 3 in their straight-ahead (for them, anyway) vein, and the other 2 working in their "third stream" (the attempt to blend jazz and classical music that had a brief run in this period). Each original album appears on a separate CD with the original liner notes shrunk to fit on the sleeve. I need a magnifying glass to read them, but I appreciate having them.
