W illiam Tyler’s Goes West feels in many ways like the light to Modern Country ‘s shade, with the ten tunes building around strong acoustic guitar cores, instead of the lightly reverbed electric that permeated through the latter. Although we all know that William Tyler is a highly proficient electric guitarist with a string of hits behind him, on this album the idea of him staying with the acoustic has helped produce his most focused album yet. That’s not to say the electric guitar doesn’t get a run out; indeed, it almost steals the show twice on ‘Man in a Hurry’, first with Duffy’s Stratocaster jumping in front of Tyler’s leisurely picking to form a gorgeous double act, and then halfway through with a spiky electric solo jabbing at the tune, giving it a sterner edge

New album Modern Country out now on Merge Records. If so many of Tyler’s records have found him loading up the trunk, inviting you into the passenger seat, and heading some place new, then Goes West is more like finding a remote spot to park for a while and taking in the sunset. William Tyler: Goes West. The solo guitarist’s fourth album is soft and subtle, approaching the strains of pop while still basking in the solitude of Americana.

8:29 am PST. Andy Kahn. Guitarist William Tyler announced a new studio album Goes West featuring the single Fail Safe. Merge Records will release the record on January 25. The follow-up to 2016’s Modern Country was recorded at Flora Recording And Playback in Portland, Oregon with engineer Tucker Martine. The 10-track album was produced by Brad Cook (of Megafaun) who also played bass alongside guitarist Bill Frisell, Dawes drummer Griffin Goldsmith, Phil Cook/Hiss Golden Messenger keyboardist James.

William Tyler's Goes West echoes the sentiment of those artists while adding new twists that help his music feel contemporary. It is arguably Tyler's most surreal work, with warm production adding to the sense of wonder and passion central to this album. Tyler has managed to create vast landscapes on his previous records like Modern Country. His guitar drew the distant horizon line; there was a sense of grand openness and airiness throughout. Goes West functions on a somewhat smaller scale. I think the best part of this album, and in Tyler's discography, in general, is how easy it is to engage with his music. It is unfussy, transportive guitar music that drips with energy. His music manages to go into exciting directions while never feeling challenging. While I love a good challenge (I play with Pichu in Smash), it is nice to have an album that is this inviting at the beginning of the year.
