Talk about June11 - Matter Is Alive

Hanelynai
Coincidences do not exist, so it’s said. This consideration can certainly be applied to “Matter is Alive”, the latest work by June 11, released on EE Tapes, both from Belgium. When an album opens with a cover of Eno/Roedelius/Moebius’ “By this River” and, later, reveals an homage to Harold Budd (“Harold Budd (for Harold Budd) – can it be clearer?), it’s expectable to obtain a collection of soft, almost chill-out compositions, where melody, experimentation, (acoustic and analogue electronic) instrumentation and vocalisation meet (not collide) in a sound film that could easily be placed in 1980s Brussels. That’s what happens here (although June 11 comes from Gent – a minor detail). In its different dimensions, “Matter is Alive” – produced between and 2006 and 2008 – is a homogeneous recording, full of quality and intention, guarantied by June 11’s numerous elements/collaborators. It is a truly beautiful CD, that, in spite of its “old-fashioned” sonority (which places it away from the “state of the art” or the latest trends), brings back old and friendly ghosts. A must have item. 25-12-2008 - CHAIN DLK - Nuno Loureiro ============== June 11 is a Belgian project set up by Jan Van Den Broeke (previously involved in The Misz). With Matter Is Alive this musician composes a meaningful and refined ambient opus, which sounds like a pure soundtrack release. The astral atmospheres more than once remind me of Brian Eno. So it’s definitely not a coincidence if the opening cut By This River is a cover version of B. Eno. The song I Know The Moonlight again reveals the influence of Eno. We’re here visiting a quiet and prosper astral sonic universe. Instruments like piano, guitar, bass, clarinet and sax have been used here while 3 female guest vocalists take care of the singing. Some percussion parts have been added as well. The intimate atmosphere created by June 11 excels in a few pieces. There’s the totally chill-out Harold Budd (for Harold Budd). Harold Budd who’s an American ambient and avant-garde composer has been quoted as another main source of inspiration for the June 11. Another interesting cut is the last song entitled Ta Bouche, Ta Peau. This song is half spoken half sung in French language and it sounds quite sensual. The female and male vocal parts in this song are quite remarkable in their interaction. Matter Is Alive is a great and original piece of minimal ambient music! 21-01-2009 - SIDE-LINE
