On album opener "Veraison", a truncated viola loop repeats for the song's duration, as Molinaro blankets it in a palimpsest of overdubs, her legato bowing countering the clipped repetition of the sample. Dusty Flourescent/Wooden Shelves" begins with a misleading sense of restraint, all plucked banjo strings and roomy snare strikes. While Talkdemonic's streamlined compositions avoid the trappings of more self-indulgent instrumental acts, at times, they could use a little more room to breathe. Many songs don't make it past two minutes, which results in the album unfolding like a single piece of nearly continuous music. But, also like the cover's birch grove, Beat Romantic's allure isn't in isolated beauty, but the juxtaposition of so much of it.

Talkdemonic is an avant-instrumental duo based in Portland, Oregon. The band consists of Kevin O'Connor and Lisa Molinaro. Talkdemonic signed with Isaac Brock's Glacial Pace Records to release their fourth record in Fall 2011. Talkdemonic was established by O'Connor in December 2002 after he moved from Pullman, Washington to Portland. It began as a musical project to express his obsession with instrumental hip hop and electronic music.

Here in Portland, Oregon, home of both Talkdemonic and yours truly, the weekly culture rag, Willamette Week, named the duo of Kevin O'Connor and Lisa Molinaro the best new band of 2005. Initially, I was disappointed that my own indie-rockin' quintet didn't receive said honor. Despite our lack of merchandise, shifting line-up, absence from the press, and patchy live schedule, I thought we'd totally killed in '05!) But it takes only one listen to the quietly beguiling sounds of Talkdemonic to realize that they are well deserving of that accolade.

If a mad-scientist of experimental music combined the styles of folk, ambient, and rock in a test tube, you might end up with the album Beat Romantic. The folk-tronic instrumental duo Talkdemonic weaves together a lot of sounds on this disc that have been arranged together quite seamlessly in the past, despite their disparate backgrounds. The band adds moments of purposeful disjointedness to this mix, with the apparent goal of creating small amounts of tension, much like post-Mr. Bungle outfit Secret Chiefs 3, who have an altogether similar, though much more frenetic sound.
