Salque and pianist Eric Le Sage deliver suave readings in a classic French tradition, and their approach works wonderfully in the Op. 5 sonatas, less well in the middle-period Cello Sonata No. 3 in A major, Op. 69, and once again excitingly in the late fourth and fifth sonatas, which also were stylistically transitional works and among the first in which Beethoven's late style really showed itself.

Some illustrious predecessors (Bach, Geminiani or Vivaldi) had already worked on the creation of an autonomous repertoire of concertos and sonatas for the cello, but Beethoven transformed the former instrument of accompaniment and support of the continuo into a true partner of a music based on dialogue, exchange, and contrast. Originating from the rebec family that had developed since the twelfth century, the cello appeared as a violin bass in Italy in the seventeenth century, then at the end of the following century its musical role was freed from the accompaniment to which it was most often. It is this same King of Prussia who was the dedicatee in 1796 of the two Sonatas op. 5 "for pianoforte and cello" by Beethoven.

Cello Sonatas No. 1 and No. 2, Op. 5, are two sonatas for cello and piano written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1796, while he was in Berlin. While there, Beethoven met the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm II, an ardent music-lover and keen cellist. Although the sonatas are dedicated to Friedrich Wilhelm II, Ferdinand Ries tells us that Beethoven "played several times at the court, where he also played the two cello sonatas, opus 5, composed for Duport (the King's first cellist) and himself".
