Though they still tend towards pastiche, the Dandy Warhols' third full-length, Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia, presents a bakers' dozen of their most focused and cohesive songs. Not surprisingly, the most successful songs on Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia are the least derivative ones, such as anxious pop songs like "Solid," "Get Off," and the delicate, lovelorn ballad "Sleep. On those tracks, as well as the satirical single "Bohemian Like You" - this year's model of their hit "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" - the Dandys reveal themselves as a savvy pop band with a voice of their own.

Over a decade after its initial release, the Dandy Warhols' THIRTEEN TALES FROM URBAN BOHEMIA still holds up. Sometimes elegant, sometimes ham-fisted, sometimes ironic and detached, all of the songs here are well-crafted pop songs with super-strong melodies. The album is creative, but it pulls upon a wealth of great influences. What makes this album better than the others in the Warhols' catalog (at least in my opinion) is the sheer amount of ground that the band covers. I think this is the best Dandy Warhols album so far, and I like the band a lot. "13 Tales" is much more solid than the previous "Come Down" and consistently better songwriting. If you don't know their music, this album is a tasty starting point. It is a rockin' album, but it is very dynamic - from quieter and melodic tunes to 'balls to the wall' blasts of fuzz and distortion intended to annoy neighbors.
