Heavy Weather is the eighth album by Weather Report, released in 1977 through Columbia Records. The release originally sold about 500,000 copies; it would prove to be the band's most commercially successful album.

It is the groove that rules this mesmerizing album, leading off with the irresistible 3/4 marathon deceptively tagged as the "Boogie Woogie Waltz" and proceeding through a variety of Latin-grounded hip-shakers.

Other tracks were reminiscent of Weather Report’s previous albums, making Sweetnighter a transition from the band’s first phase to what one might call its mature phase. Zawinul has since spoken often of the motivations behind this change. I had written a few pieces like ‘Boogie Woogie Waltz’ and ‘125th Street Congress’ for the third album which required a little more versatility. Eric Grávátt was not the drummer on these tunes; not that he couldn’t have done it, but with him it was a mental thing. He just didn’t have his heart in it.

Sweetnighter is Weather Report at their peak! This and Mysterious Traveller are their finest work. album at the Philadelphia jazz festival at the Spectrum in PA. 2 months ago. Reminds me a lot of the headhunters album, which came out in the same year. 3 months ago. This album is very good. But the bass sound is so fragile compared to the Jaco Pastorius style. So strange to see how there is a before and an after Pastorius in bass sound.

Talk about Weather Report - Sweetnighter

Lost Python
Pure alchemical reaction even the most ingenious of music scientist will never figure out...that is Sweetnighter. The instrumental, subtle funkiness and brilliant wah-piano courtesy of Zawinul surpasses any fusion made in 1973. I also believe this was the 1st time Zawinul started to incorporate synthesizer into the band although not as present as Mysterious Traveler.Musicianship here was sent by the same deity that delivered Tesla(the Croatian inventor!) to grace our ears with delicious instrumental soma!

Did you ever wonder who invented Drum 'n' Bass? Listen to "125th Street Congress". Hey, it's 1973.... No more questions. I keep saying - this is one of the most influential albums of the 20th century. My rating: a million stars!
Marige
Agreed. Drum 'n' Bass was only ONE example how influential Sweetnighter was. Drum 'n' Bass is not important at all. Will be long forgotten when this album is still moving on.

I agree with "one of the most influential albums of the 20th century". That's why I do not understand what's the idea behind degrading music visionaries and pioneers by associating their masterpieces of free musical expression with the straitjacket of rhythm dogmas that have been labelled mostly for marketing reasons. Drum 'n' Bass is not the measure of all things but rather temporary fashion with an expiry date while it was Joe Zawinul who raised a few bars for eternity.

How's this MOV version sound? Always have been extremely impressed with MOV's reissue rock titles. I don't have any of their jazz titles. Anyone who owns this particular pressing, let me know your thoughts on it.
Doriel
That's very helpful, Thank you. I have a few original copies of this record and both the US and UK original sound great, but the UK original takes the cake. I'm guessing that MOV reissued the UK version of this, so your MOV version probably sounds as good or better.

I have a mint copy of this Music On Vinyl version. To me it sounds great and the pressing is very quiet. I don't have an orignal pressing to compare it to but to my ears is sounds like this re-issue was mastered from the original tapes or from a proper digital transfer of the original tapes. Again, to me it sounds really good.

One brilliant record I found for $1. Some of the best music I've ever heard. Jazz rock

Forget BITCHES BREW. This is the ONE!!! Criminally underrated LP. When critics had ears they might have noticed that this one is much more influential on musical directions than the often recalled Bitches Brew which is IMO a completely overrated LP. Here on SWEETNIGHTER you can find/hear what was comming next: Fusion, World Music, HipHop, Trance and even Drum 'n' Bass. OPEN YOUR EARS!!!

My dad had this one on wax which I was able to procure when he got rid of all his vinyl in favor of CDs. Ohhhhh man you are so spot-on! This album is so underrated, it's ridiculous it's not mentioned in the same canon as Herbie's "Headhunters," Miles' "Bitches Brew," or any of Donald Byrd's early 70's jams.

My label has "Made in England" on the bottom. Otherwise identical.

I donated most of the other Weather Report albums I owned to the less fortunate. Not this one. Zawinul points his band in the right direction on Sweetnighter. There's still plenty of free-floating jazz-rock-funk-fusion going on like previous Weather Report productions. However, the goal was clearly set in maintaining and circling back to the rhythm, unlike previous albums.
