Bertus van Lier, Jan van Gilse, Gelders Orkest Conducted By Georges Octors - Symphony No. 1, Symphony No. 2 ‎(LP). Composers' Voice Special, Composers' Voice. Bernstein, Het Gelders Orkest.

Jan Pieter Hendrik van Gilse (Rotterdam, May 11, 1881 Oegstgeest, September 8, 1944) was a Dutch composer and conductor. Coming from a family of theologians, Jan van Gilse showed an early aptitude for piano playing and composing. From 1897 onwards, Van Gilse would study at the Cologne conservatory. After his teacher, Franz Wüllner, died in 1902, he continued his studies with Engelbert Humperdinck in Berlin. From 1909 to 1911, he studied in Italy.

Symphony N. ("Jeremiah"), for mezzo-soprano & orchestra. 1. Prophecy - largamente. 2. Profanation - vivace con brio. Symphony No. 2 ("The Age of Anxiety"), for piano & orchestra or 2 pianos. 4. Part 1. The Prologue.

Jan van Gilse was a Dutch composer. He studied composition and conducting with Franz Wüllner at Cologne University (1897-1902). In 1902 he was awarded a prize for his First Symphony by the Beethoven Haus in Bonn. After studying with Humperdinck at the Akademische Meisterschule in Berlin, he worked as a conductor at the Bremen Opera, then at the Noord-Nederlandsche Opera in Amsterdam. In 1909 his Third Symphony was awarded the Michael Beer prize, which enabled him to work and study in Italy for two years. Afterwards he settled in Munich

Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise), Op. 52 (MWV A 18), is "A Symphony-Cantata on Words of the Holy Bible, for Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra" by Felix Mendelssohn. After the composer's death it was also published as his Symphony No. 2 in B-flat major, a naming and numbering that is not Mendelssohn's. It requires two sopranos and a tenor as soloists, along with a chorus and orchestra. It lasts almost twice as long as any of Mendelssohn's other four symphonies.

Het Gelders Orkest ( HGO, The Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra) plays more than one hundred symphonic concerts per season. The performances take place mainly in the province of Gelderland, in cities like Arnhem, Nijmegen, Apeldoorn, Zutphen, Doetinchem and Ede. The orchestra also appears in various major Dutch venues like the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht and De Doelen in Rotterdam, and also abroad. In collaboration with the Nationale Reisopera, the orchestra performs one opera every year and accompanies several choirs in the region
