Twilight of the Gods is the sixth studio album by Swedish extreme metal band Bathory. It continues the exploration of the newly created Viking metal style, and also displays heavy epic doom and classical influences; it is titled after an opera by Wagner. It is a mid-tempo, more acoustic album than previous Bathory releases, though it follows on from the Hammerheart album.

Twilight of the Gods may refer to: Ragnarök, in Norse mythology, a series of major events foretold to result in the death of a number of gods. Twilight of the Thunder God, a 2008 album by Amon Amarth. Twilight of the Gods (opera) (Götterdämmerung), the last of the four operas by Richard Wagner that make up The Ring of the Nibelung. Twilight of the Gods (album), a 1991 album by Bathory. Twilight of the Gods, a Bathory tribute band and supergroup, fronted by Alan Averill.

I think Twilight of the Gods would have gone down as absolutely legendary if Quorthon had just done backing vocals (which I think he was able to do pretty well) and had brought on a more talented vocalist to front this album. The melodies here are simply fantastic and would have been fuckin' epic with a singer who could hit the notes perfectly. The album is singularly defined by its title track.

Album Name Twilight of the Gods. Erscheinungsdatum 29 Juni 1991. Labels Black Mark Production. Musik GenreViking Black. Mitglieder die dieses Album besitzen383. 1. Prologue, Twilight of the Gods, Epilogue. This is the last Bathory album to feature a full band line-up. Having lost enthusiasm with metal in general (including black metal), Quorthon's tastes started leaning towards classical music. Those albums from "Blood Fire Death" to this one are proof of his classical influence. The quality of the album is similar to that of "Hammerheart", but this is less black than its predecessor. There aren't many screams to be found, nor any full acoustic tracks.

Twilight of the Gods (1991) by Bathory. Labels: Black Mark Production. Genres: Viking Metal Members: Quorthon, Kothaar, Vvornth. Re-released on red vinyl in 2003 by Black Mark. Originally intended to be the final Bathory album. The tracklisting on the 2003 pressing is: 1. Prologue - Twilight of the Gods - Epilogue, Through Blood by Thunder, Blood and Iron (30:45) 2. Under the Runes (5:58) 3. To Enter Your Mountain (7:36) 4. Bond of Blood (7:36) 5. Hammerheart (4:42) 6. (untitled outro) (0:23). The melody of "Hammerheart" is adapted from the fourth movement of "Jupiter" from The Planets suite by English classical composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934).

Still, when removed from this chronological experiment, there's no denying that Twilight of the Gods is one heck of a heavy metal album. Maybe it could have used a little more of the old-school black metal simplicity of early Bathory, but the band's forward momentum was such at this juncture in their career that a look back, however brief, was simply not in the cards

Twilight of the Gods. Release date: June 29th, 1991. Catalog ID: BMCD 666-6. Prologue - Twilight of the Gods - Epilogue. 2. Through Blood by Thunder.

Album · 1991 · 8 Songs. After forging the sound of Viking metal on 1990’s Hammerheart, Bathory’s Tomas Quorthon Forsberg returns with more confidence on Twilight of the Gods, alchemizing glacial riffs, classical touches, and Odyssean choruses. He’s at his best on the 11-minute title track, playing all the instruments and multitracking his own voice for a one-man warrior saga. Under the Runes flashes like cold lightning with its distorted guitar harmonics, while Hammerheart reworks an English suite by Gustav Holst into a heartfelt ode to Valhalla. Talk about Bathory - Twilight Of The Gods

Black mark did a pretty bad job at this pressing, especially when compared to what Noise did with Hammerheart. The music is very quiet, especially the acoustic parts. I have to turn the volume knob about 15 db higher than normal to hear it properly, which amplifies the noise considerably. It's still very listenable though. Buy this album if you're trying to finish your original Bathory vinyl collection, but if you want a copy for listening go for the CD.

However, I don't particularly care for the Hammerheart track at the end which doesn't really mesh all that well with the rest of the album (though I get what he was going for) and just has such a cheap synthesized sound to it.Ultimately I can (though, with difficulty) look past the vocals and enjoy what's here, but it could have been so much better. Take that more as a compliment to Quorthon's talent for crafting great instrumentals than an insult for him not being a very good clean singer.
X-MEN
Dear all, My copy looks NM, but bas surface noise and cracks on calm parts. I have the feeling that it is the case for all copies. Could anyone say if he owns A perfect copy without any cracks ?

Same with my copy, which is VG+. Still very listenable, but they should have upped the volume of the acoustic parts. It's the same with Destroyer of Worlds. Does anyone own Requiem or Blood on Ice on original vinyl? How do they sound?
MEGA FREEDY
Same here, I don't mind cracks but on the first track acoustic parts are ridiculously quiet lol. Anyway I like it over all
Vrion
I've got two copies, both vg+ and I agree with you. Don't think there is a perfect copy which sucks a bit as those acoustic parts are the best (they are also very quiet in the mix)

Probably the finest metal album ever cut to vinyl. Set on an epic scale that has never really been matched to this day. Although thoroughly outstanding at every turn. The album is singularly defined by its title track. Giving some real honest, poured from the soul social commentary that is still as relevant to todays world as it was when first recorded. Perhaps even more so nowadays, judging by how fast things seem to be going down the toilet these last few years.. The rest of the album is a more tempered extension of the subject matter that was touched upon in "Hammerheart", Quorthons previous album. With some strong Viking / Scandinavian culture themed songs and much improved musically through more complex arrangements and better production. These were very much the first of their kind (along with Hammerheart), and of course, providing the spark for the Viking Metal sub genre that we see today."Woe all small creatures, it's the Twilight of the Gods..."Real Ragnarock n roll....
