The Fritzl case emerged in April 2008, when a woman named Elisabeth Fritzl (born 6 April 1966) told police in the town of Amstetten, Austria, that she had been held captive for 24 years by her father, Josef Fritzl (born 9 April 1935). Fritzl had assaulted, sexually abused, and raped her numerous times during her imprisonment inside a concealed area in the basement of the family home.

Elisabeth Fritzl was held captive in the cellar in Austria from the age of 18. Her father repeatedly raped her and she gave birth to seven children. Last week, the dark side came to be symbolised in a squat, grey building in Amstetten where Josef Fritzl, 73, imprisoned his daughter for 24 years, fathering seven children with her in a windowless, underground warren of sound-proofed rooms. By the end of last week, people were coming from all over the region for a glimpse of the monster's lair.

For the next 24 years, the inside of the dirt-walled cellar would be the only thing Elisabeth Fritzl would see. Her father would lie to her mother and the police, feeding them stories about how she’d run away and joined a cult. Eventually, the police investigation into her whereabouts would run cold and before long, the world would forget about the missing Fritzl girl. After the arrest, the children in the cellar were also released and Rosemarie Fritzl fled the home. She had allegedly known nothing about the events taking place right under her feet and Josef backed up her story. The tenants who had lived in the apartment on the first floor of the Fritzl home also never knew what was happening right beneath them, as Josef had explained away all sounds by blaming faulty piping and a noisy heater.

Psychiatrist Adelheid Kastner told the court on Wednesday that Mr Fritzl posed a danger and should be held in a mental facility. Mr Fritzl was emotionally stunted, the psychiatrist told the court. Mr Fritzl, who ruled his family with an iron fist, locked his daughter up in a cellar of his home on August 29, 1984. He said she had joined an obscure sect. Three of the surviving children were brought to live with Mr Fritzl and his wife Rosemarie, 69, while the other three spent their entire lives in the dungeon, never seeing daylight. Mr Fritzl gradually expanded the dungeon to 40 square metres. Elisabeth and her family are now at a secret location while the authorities attempt to help them build a new life.

The prosecutor detailed the unbearably squalid conditions in the tiny bunker which was home to Elisabeth for 24 years and in which three of the children spent their entire lives until they were freed last year. She said: "There was no heating. After Lisa was born, the cellar was becoming so cramped that Fritzl decided to move some of the children upstairs. He forced Elisabeth to write letters to her parents, saying she could no longer look after the children, and pretended she had left them on the doorstep. Lisa, Monika and Alexander were "adopted" by Fritzl and his wife between 1993 and 1997.
