Trinity (Past, Present and Future) is the third studio album by Slum Village, released on August 13, 2002. Trinity marked the group's first shift away from its original lineup, due to J Dilla's departure following Fantastic, Vol. 2, to pursue a solo career. Longtime affiliate, Elzhi, joined the remaining members; a move which was initially disapproved by hardcore fans, but with time has been accepted, and even praised.
Yes, Jay Dee's three productions are among the best of the lot, though the others - quite a few of them by Slum Village's own T3 and one each from the Roots' Scott Storch and Hi Tek - both recall and push forward Jay Dee's blueprint for point-perfect groove. The single "Tainted" is one of the best on tap here, while the laid-back dancefloor anthem "Disco" finds Slum Village so ambitious they plan on getting played in barbershopes and beauty salons as well as the clubs
That mystery was solved with 2002’s Trinity (Past, Present & Future). Jay Dee still contributes Let’s, One," and Hoes, three songs that showcase his new electro-influenced style. Producer Jay Dee was arguably the most essential member of Slum Village, so after he officially left to pursue solo interests it was hard to envision how the remaining members could keep going. That mystery was solved with 2002’s Trinity (Past, Present & Future).
Trinity (Past, Present and Future). What Trinity lacks in consistency, it more than makes up for in ambition and eclecticism, as Slum Village careens assuredly from aggressive, sinister dance-rap to funky minimalism to blissed-out soul. 70. Trinity is a more diverse album than their last, but there are times when the.
Trinity: Past Present & Future Explicit Lyrics. Trinity (Past, Present And Future). Though the overall production is uneven, young-Turk beatmakers Karieem Riggins and Waajeed O'Bryant shine on tracks like "La La" and "Tainted," which build on the momentum created by the group's debut, Fantastic, Vol. 2. Unfortunately, Trinity all but excludes founding member-producer Jay Dee, and in the end, Jay Dee's three contributions eclipse all others. We're left wondering what Trinity would have sounded like if all three original members were still in cahoots
For Trinity, Slum Village have enlisted emcee Elzhi to assume Jay's mic duties while largely relying upon T3 to take over the boards. For most, the question wasn't "will they succeed?" but "how can they possibly?" Their first single, "Tainted", finds Slum Village returning to familiar territory. With a chill vibe and harmonious R&B; crooning, it's more than a little reminiscent of Fantastic's "Players". Unfortunately, "Tainted" is one of the few bright spots on a very mediocre album. After a few tracks, it becomes increasingly more difficult to ignore the pathetic lyrics and boring flows- even the production seems redundant, bland, and horribly imitative and regressive. In the song "Disco", the Slum Village emcees manage to fill three minutes with complete lyrical nonsense: "Thug ass niggas want to disco," declares the chorus. Um, no. To paraphrase Chuck D, hip-hop was created 'cuz we never dug disco.
