Maddy Prior ‎– Ravenchild. Label: Park Records ‎– PRKCD49. Country: UK. Released: 1999. 12. Dance On The Wind. 13. Great Silkie Of Sules Skerry. Arranged By – Prior, Holland, Donockley Written-By – Trad.

On Ravenchild, Maddy Prior teamed up again with keyboard player Nick Holland and t Troy Donockley, whose arsenal included Uilleann pipes and low whistle, as she had on her previous album, Flesh & Blood. The centerpiece of the album was a six song suite dubbed "In the Company of Ravens" (also the title of the first song), a series of Prior originals concerning the carrion birds who give the word "ravenous" its meaning.

She was born in Blackpool and moved to St Albans in her teens. Her father, Allan Prior, was co-creator of the police drama Z-Cars. She was married to Rick Kemp and their daughter Rose Kemp is also a singer. She was part of the singing duo 'Mac & Maddy' with Mac MacLeod

Maddy Prior, England's greatest folk vocalist, employs her tremendous talents to make a magnificent album, "Ravenchild". This work features Prior's elegant and powerful singing, her intelligent song selection, and her insightful and clever songwriting. Her suite of songs, "In the Company of Ravens", is intriguing, educational, and at times, downright funky. Troy Donnockley's and Nick Holland's superb musicianship and smooth production also make this CD a wonderful listening experience. I know Maddy's voice from Steel Eye Span and this album puts it at the centre, with excellent back up musicians.

Here's a health to the jolly blacksmith, the best of all fellows Who works at his anvil while the boy blows the bellows.

This song is by Maddy Prior and appears on the album Ravenchild (1999). Why do you see me and tip your headWith questions dark and wildWhy do I shiver through my backbone?Because I know, cried the Ravenchild. Why do you call me with that tragic voiceBroken and defiledWhy does it strangle my heart's ease?Because I feel, cried the Ravenchild. What are you whispering so quiet on my earEvery once in a whileWhat are you showing so rare and sincere?I am happy, cried the Ravenchild.
