The first movement of La Mer starts out with a sense of mystery, with thunderous kettle drums and strings playing well. The sound quality is acceptable, with emphasis being placed on the lower registers of the orchestra.

Michael Tilson Thomas' 1982 Sony recording of Debussy's La Mer and Nocturnes with the Philharmonia Orchestra does have its good points. Tilson Thomas' conception of the pieces as fiery and radiant is certainly commendable, and he is able to realize his conception in sharply drawn, brilliantly colorful, and powerfully driven performances. While it cannot be denied that there are exceptionally beautiful passages here, the overall effect is somewhat dull.

He is currently music director of the San Francisco Symphony, and artistic director of the New World Symphony, an American orchestral academy based in Miami Beach, Florida. Tilson Thomas was born in Los Angeles, California, to Ted and Roberta Thomas, a Broadway stage manager and a middle school history teacher respectively.
