Familiars is the fifth studio album by American indie rock group The Antlers. It was released on June 16, 2014, by Transgressive Records in the United Kingdom and on June 17, 2014, by ANTI- in the United States. The album was preceded by the singles "Palace" and "Hotel". In an interview with Pitchfork Media, Silberman explained the concept of Familiars stating, "I was trying to understand attachment in this record

They’ve doubled down on Undersea’s somnambulant moodiness and increased focus on atmosphere, resulting in their longest, most subtle release. As with every Antlers record since Hospice, Familiars was self-produced, and the group’s collective ear for texture continues to take hold as its own expressive instrument. As ever, drama is in no short supply either.
On their fifth album, the Brooklyn three-piece opt for something a bit unfamiliar: The nine tracks are grounded in jazzier, spacier arrangements, filled out with trumpets, trombones, cellos and upright bass. It’s a perfect fit for singer-guitarist Peter Silberman, who spins haunting tales of delusion, paranoia and self-loathing on eerie songs like Doppelganger, Hotel and Director, reaching new stages of self-awareness and sadness. Emotion has always been this band’s definite strong suit; Familiars finds the Antlers on a new, magnificent level of heavy songwriting
The Antlers once made a concept album set in a children’s cancer ward. For the Brooklyn indie rockers’ fifth full-length release, frontman Pete Silberman has been delving deep into ‘The Tibetan Book of the Dead’ for philosophical inspiration. Welcome back, Chuckles – you’re just in time for summer. Familiars’ is a kind of Zen chamber pop; a hymn to living in the present and learning from your past without being overwhelmed by it. It helps, of course, that the band’s music remains so silkily seductive. A narcotic fog of pianos, horns and languid guitar figures eventually resolves itself into something radiant and subtly melodic. These baroque yet strangely ambient mood pieces make a perfect backdrop to Silberman’s musings on time and transience. The end result is immersive, emotionally involving and (eventually) even uplifting – against all the odds, a treat for long summer evenings.

The Antlers’ third full-length album, Hospice, marked the beginning of the project's shift from Silberman's solo project into its full-band incarnation, featuring significant contributions from Lerner and Cicci, as well as guest vocals by Sharon Van Etten. The band self-released the album in March 2009, selling out all of the quantities in stock. They later signed with New York City-based label Frenchkiss Records, who released a re-mastered version of Hospice on August 18, 2009 . In fall 2015, The Antlers ended a worldwide tour in support of Familiars. The tour began in June 2014 with performances across the . Europe and Australia.
On Familiars, The Antlers abandon the electronic influences that informed the Brooklyn band’s last full-length, 2011’s Burst Apart, opting instead for an expansive, lounge-jazz feel. Drummer Michael Lerner caresses snares and cymbals with brushes, we hear mournful horn sections, and Peter Silberman’s well-controlled falsetto remains one of the trio’s defining characteristics. The biggest question that Familiars poses is whether or not the album will feel as cathartic and necessary to those who don’t have mortality at the forefront of their mind. The human expiration date is something I’ve been grappling with for the past two months following the untimely death of someone I was close to and cared about a great deal, and listening to Familiars, for me, was nearly impossible to separate from that experience. But whether or not we choose to confront these matters (What happens when we die?
