Hypnolovewheel - Space Mountain flac album

An underexposed and underrated combo from Long Island, Hypnolovewheel issued several albums in the late '80s and early '90s that offered a distinctive blend of power pop, dreamy psychedelia, noisy '60s-style garage rock, and tense, nervy post-punk. They drew comparisons to bands as far-ranging as . Wire, and the Embarrassment, topping off their rather strange brew with a smart, quirky sense of humor that was most overt on their earlier material

With production help from Lou Giordano and King Missile's Chris Xefos, Hypnolovewheel makes its entertaining and slightly off-center way through indie rock fun, late-'80s style, on Space Mountain. This was the band's third record and the first to gain wide attention, and deservedly so - while later releases were even better, Space Mountain makes the correct move of not mistaking humor as an excuse to be dumb

Hypnolovewheel was an American indie-rock band from Long Island. Guitarist Dave Ramirez, who had occasionally played with King Missile, later played with Dump. Current bands featuring members of Hypnolovewheel include The Special Pillow, Dew-Claw, and Electrostim.

Back in the day, Hypnolovewheel were never one my go-to bands, but after re-investigating their music many years after the fact, I'm finding there was more there for me than I realized. The Long Island quartet exuded no shortage of typical indie rock appeal, yet they brought to the table a psych undercurrent not to mention sonically dense song structures that most of their contemporaries couldn't be bothered with.
