Louie Louie began life as a 1955 Richard Berry song, an imitation Jamaican sea shanty set to a rock ‘n’ roll beat. The mushmouthed sound of The Kingsmen’s cover version came about largely by accident. As the New York Times reported after the death of frontman Jack Ely in 2015: Jack Ely would later insist that as a 19-year-old singing Louie Louie in one take in a Portland, Or. studio in 1963, he had followed the original lyrics faithfully
