For the first time in nearly half a decade, Numan, to a large if not total extent, recaptured the sense of compelling darkness at the heart of his music on Strange Charm. Though Numan himself had a difficult time with the recording of the album, speaking in later years about his struggles with then-new technology and how best to make it work for his music, the end results often justify the expense of effort.

Talk about Gary Numan - Strange Charm

This album also seems to have some volume issues - My Breathing, The Sleeproom and This Is Love survive pretty much in tact, but where there are very loud sections, usually intros, and the volume gets a bit too much the levels suddenly reduce! It's a bit like a very old tape auto-record level, and very very annoying. I got hold of a 1986 original CD and this happens to a lesser degree on thatn too, but is very noticeable on this US release for some reason. Hope this was sorted out for the UK/EU Eagle one, which I haven't heard! The bonus tracks don't suffer quite as much, apart from NTFLT 12". Overall this is a collection-filler due to the audio transfer, which is a real pity as the tracklist and bonuses are great!

As a big Numan fan, I own allmost all vinyls and original CD's. I bought this CD because I thought it was a good chance to have many of my vinyl b-sides issued on pristine digital quality. Bonus tracks were taken from original tapes issued on the 1995 Babylon Series which suffered from novice tape transfer skills. Compared to the original vinyls, tracks 11 to 13 are played at slightly different speeds. Also I found stereo and phase invertions when compared to the originals. This badly-made release directly attempts with the artist legacy.

Another strong album in a row from Numan here. It starts out with “My Breathing,” which is my all time favorite song by him. The atmosphere here is so thick you can cut it with a knife! The keyboards have an appealing “Old World” sensibility and the female vocals are not strident here than they can sometimes be. The stately rhythm bed is a wonder to behold. I can’t say enough good about this track so I’ll move on.“I Can’t Stop” features an appealing, relentless quality as one would imagine from its title. “New Thing From London Town” is another song recorded with Shakatak’s Bill Sharpe. Some nice flavoring again from that collaboration. The awesome ”Strange Charm” should have been a single! The Oriental synth flourishes complement the outstanding staccato vocal arrangements of Numan and Tessa Niles, which interlock with a breathtaking precision. “The Need” overstays its welcome a bit but is otherwise an amusing rewrite of Bowie’s “Cracked Actor.” Numan is never one to shy away from Bowieisms! Like on “The Fury,” Numan ends the program with another ballad. “This Is Love” is just the man and a piano to harmonize with its lyrical vulnerability. This was another winner from his Numa Records label but he would soon surface in a 3 album deal with IRS that paid fewer dividends than this more vibrant work.http://postpunkmonk.wordpress.comFor more ruminations on the Fresh New Sound Of Yesterday
