Chicago (sometimes referred to as Chicago II) is the second studio album by Chicago-based American rock band Chicago. Like their debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, this was a double album. It was their first album under the name Chicago (the band's prior name, Chicago Transit Authority, was changed due to a threatened lawsuit from the Chicago Transit Authority) and the first to use the now ubiquitous cursive Chicago logo on the cover
On the topic of the album, Cub Koda wrote, "There's an innocence to these songs and their performances that's both charming and unsettling. Hacked-at drumbeats, whacked-around chords, songs that seem to have little or no meter to them. being played on out-of-tune, pawn-shop-quality guitars all converge, creating dissonance and beauty, chaos and tranquility, causing any listener coming to this music to rearrange any pre-existing notions about the relationships between talent, originality, and ability. Better than the Beatles – A Tribute to the Shaggs (2001).
Their Chicago Shags project is one that has released on Creme Organization, Bunker and Strange Life Records, forever mining increasingly exciting house depths since 2005. Now they return with The Family Album on the ever-excellent MOS Recordings. The four track EP starts with 'Ponderosa'; a forward looking, cosmic surfing house cut wired with plenty of smooth electronics and pure jacking energy, before 'Pancake Breakfast' glistens and glints just as much with its firefly synth lines, gurgling baseline and sweet, pixelated melodies.
Profile: Duo from The Netherlands.
But improbable as it may be, the Chicago Shags-his group with Brian Chinetti of Orgue Electronique fame-have four new jack tracks for us in the form of The Family Album. If Lost in a Blue Night, the Shags' Crème d EP from last fall, felt like it didn't bring much new to the table, then The Family Album is a step in the right direction. Still, Chicago remains close to the pair's heart. Ponderosa" moves quickly but lightly, with a drone of minor-key pads tempering a skittish rhythm section of Roland drum machines and inquisitive bassline.
