Songs By Southern English Gypsy Traditional Singers (Topic, 2012). You’ll either love or hate this field recording made in Kent in 1954 by Peter Kennedy. It’s a ballad that tells of the accidental drowning of a young soldier. It’s sung by Charlie Scamp, an English gypsy, in true gypsy style, swooping and crooning in his wonderfully exaggerated way. Romany is an album by the Hollies, the first not to feature their lead singer Allan Clarke, who had left to embark on a solo career. He was replaced by Swedish singer Mikael Rickfors. In the opinion of contemporary and retrospective critics this moved the band further away from the original vocal harmony style of Allan Clarke, Tony Hicks and Graham Nash.

Your first album Romano Hip Hop really launched you guys into the spotlight, it received great attention, lots of radio play and it really put you out there. If we look at the opening song, Tajsa, what does the title mean and what is the song about? Yeah, Tajsa translates as ‘tomorrow and’ it’s a song about hope. Did you also hold that hope inside that ‘Ok, I’m a gypsy but I’m going to break out one day’, I’m gonna get out of this situation and change things? Yeah of course, it was all about my whole life. I didn’t really have a nice childhood: my father, for example, is a good man but his demon was always alcohol and it was a difficult situation. Now besides singing in Romany, Gipsy. how do you like that creative aspect of mixing the traditional with the modern? You know, I like it very much because hip hop alone is quite boring.
