Sempiternal Deathreign, completely lacking any advance knowledge of what death/doom metal was supposed to sound like by 1990s standards due to their limited psychic abilities, crafted a sound that was unlike anything else at the time and is unmatched to this day. Not content with simply slowing down parts of the death/thrash that was so prevalent in the underground in the 1980s, they are one of the few examples of bands to play what I call "literal death/doom", as in literally taking influences from both death metal (in its mid-to-late 1980s shape and form) and traditional doom metal. The Spooky Gloom' is one of these underground albums that almost no one knows. This album sounds like a brilliant concoction of oldschool death metal and atmospheric doom. Some songs clocks out at barely two minutes while others lasts for eight or ten minutes.

Sempiternal Deathreign have created a Doom Death Milestone. A seminal album any fan has to know. For a long time, the only names that were mentioned in discussions about Death Doom pioneers were bands from the United States (Winter, Goatlord) and Great Britain (Paradise Lost, Cathedral). However, an obscure scene was particularly boiling during the late 80s, early 90s: the Dutch scene. Sempiternal Deathreign have been the very first Dutch Doom band – the project started in 1987 – and 'The Spooky Gloom' was the first Death Doom full-length ever released in the entire world, in 1989, even before the well-known pillars that are 'Into Darkness', 'Lost Paradise' and 'Reflections of the Solstice'. But had this record been a total failure, this little feat would be of small interest. This is not the case, far from it! 'The Spooky Gloom' has tremendous qualities, both in terms of music and inventiveness.

Sempiternal Deathreign – Devastating Empire towards Humanity The Spooky Gloom (1988) Sempi were the heaviest band at that time in the Netherlands. I still consider it as one of the best albums that ever came out of my own country. I luckily had the opportunity to see them live when we were doing a small metalfest in our hometown, and Frank, who was doing the vocals, was 15-years-old then. How can a kid of that age have such an incredible voice like that? This song is dark, doomy and very, very heavy. They split-up shortly after releasing the album, and I wonder where they would have been if they had continued then. A monster of a track!
