Scottish folk music (also Scottish traditional music) is music that uses forms that are identified as part of the Scottish musical tradition. There is evidence that there was a flourishing culture of popular music in Scotland during the late Middle Ages, but the only song with a melody to survive from this period is the "Pleugh Song".

Many outsiders associate Scottish folk music almost entirely with bagpipes, which has indeed long played an important part of Scottish music. It is, however, not unique or indigenous to Scotland, having been imported around the 15th century and still being in use across Europe and farther abroad. Dance music is played across Scotland at dances or ceilidhs. Group dances such as jigs, strathspeys, waltzes and reels, are performed to music provided typically by an ensemble, or dance band, which can include fiddle (violin), bagpipe, accordion and percussion. 1960s Scottish folk singing was revived by artists including Ewan MacColl, who founded the first folk club in Britain, singers Alex Campbell, Jean Redpath and Dick Gaughan and groups like The Gaugers, The Corries and The McCalmans. Folk clubs boomed, with a strong Irish influence from The Dubliners.

The band was formed in 1959 with a nucleus of former members of the 177th Rover Scout Pipe Band - some of whom had served in the Armed Forces and became associated with Branch 66 in 1960. It was comprised of Veterans of such units as the 48th Highlanders, Irish Regiment, Toronto Scottish Regiment, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force. The Pipe Band were champions in the 1971 Warriors’ Day Parade in addition to many more 1st and 2nd awards in the years to follow and also in other competitions
