Nightmares on Wax mingles chillout and funk in "Mind Elevation" the fourth official album by this one-man electronic band. As expected, it's blissed and tripped out, with plenty of inventive little flourishes to keep things interesting. The only problem is that it seems to be working too hard to please. She appears on a couple of other songs, the hip-hop "Environment" and the bassline-heavy "Know My Name. Fortunately, in the cuts between these songs, Nightmares on Wax (aka George Evelyn) sticks to what it does best: liquid, sunshiny electronic-funk. In these, Evelyn sounds right in his element, whether blending R&B beats with ambient sounds in "Humble," or the chillout techno of "Bleu My Mind.

George Evelyn, the Nightmares on Wax producer who provided the template for 2000-2001's downbeat movement almost a decade before it became the bane of mix album fans, returned just in time with another LP of supremely chilled beats. Unfortunately, though, Mind Elevation isn't the unqualified triumph of Carboot Soul or Smoker's Delight, with Evelyn substituting a couple of vocal tracks for the trance-state trip-hop of his previous work.

Leeds-based Nightmares on Wax are hardly prolific: this is only their fourth album since 1990's classic early rave single, Dextrous. Their rate of work hasn't been helped by mainman George Evelyn's legendary dope intake, which led to stoner albums with titles such as Smoker's Delight and an invitation to judge Amsterdam's Cannabis Cup. Now Evelyn has apparently given up the weed, and although the titles are still silly (Bleu My Mind, for pot's sake), his music is more focused.
