Bach, Miklós Spányi ‎– ‘Württemberg’ Sonatas (1). Label: BIS ‎– BIS-CD-1423. Series: The Solo Keyboard Music – 16. Format: CD.

Hungarian early–keyboard specialist Miklós Spányi has you covered – many, many times over. Since 1998 he has been releasing two CDs per year in his . Bach: The Solo Keyboard Music series for BIS. In 2017 and 2018, he released volumes 33–36. Volume 33 includes some of the Kenner und Liebhaber sonatas played on tangent piano (also known as a clavichord), so-called for the small blades or tangents used to strike the strings. wrote sonatas for other instruments as well, and there are a couple of interesting recent recordings. Johanna Rose plays the Bach sonatas for viola da gamba, with harpsichordist Javier Núñiez (Rubicon Records). These are elegant works, rarely recorded. While Rose’s bowing arm does not have quite the attack and rhythmic exactness of a Jordi Savall or Alison Crum, she produces a clear, singing tone and has intelligent musical sense.

Miklós Spányi - Short Biography. Recordings of Organ Works.

The set of six sonatas that Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach dedicated to the young Carl Eugen, Duke of Württemberg, was composed in the early 1740s, shortly after Bach had become Chamber Musician in the employ of Frederick the Great of Prussia. The duchy of Württemberg was the object of a tug of war between Prussia and the Hapsburg empire, and Frederick had had the young duke brought to Berlin, allegedly for his education and protection. During this period Carl Eugen received instruction in music from .

The Württemberg Sonatas of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach were harpsichord pieces, composed in 1742 and 1743. As Iranian-born harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani points out in his booklet notes (which are elegant, enthusiastic, informative, personal, and altogether more appealing than almost any comparable example), this is a time thought of as part of the High Baroque, but . Bach's eldest son was already definitively going his own way.

Here Mahan Esfahani has recorded CPE Bach’s six ‘Württemberg’ sonatas, which were written in 1742–3 and published in 1744, and his thrillingly intense performances make the best possible case for this dramatic, beautifully written, endlessly imaginative but for some reason under-performed music. He was the first harpsichordist to be named a BBC New Generation Artist or to be awarded a fellowship prize by the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. Bach: Württemberg Sonatas, including "Sonata in A Minor, H. 30: I. Moderato", "Sonata in A Minor, H. 30: II. Andante", "Sonata in A Minor, H. 30: III. Allegro assai" and many more. Songs start at ₱ 3. 0.

Album including Album cover Booklet (PDF). Formats & Prices. To the six Sonatas, Rondos and Fantasias that make up the collection, Miklós Spányi adds two independent works. Bach initially composed 17 variations on the folk-like tune Ich schlief, da träumte mir in 1752 (included in Vol. 19 of this series) but returned to it almost twenty years later, publishing seven new variations. Closing the disc is another set of variations, now on an original theme, an Arioso sostenuto in A major. Bach’s solo keyboard works. He has also worked intensively to revive . Bach's favourite keyboard instrument, the clavichord. Miklós Spányi was teaching at the Oulu Conservatoire and the Sibelius Academy in Finland between 1990-2012.

Artist: Miklós Spányi Title: . Bach gives them ample dimensions, but as in previous collections he continues to reduce the length of the sonatas, to the point that Sonata No. 1 is the shortest work of the collection, although it is in three distinct movements. On this amply-filled album, Miklós Spányi also includes four other works from Carl Philipp's last decade which in various ways underline the composer's boundless curiosity.
