James Timothy Hardin (December 23, 1941 – December 29, 1980) was an American folk musician and composer. He wrote the Top 40 hit "If I Were a Carpenter", covered by, among others, Bobby Darin, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, The Four Tops, Robert Plant, Small Faces, Johnny Rivers, and Bert Jansch; his song "Reason to Believe" has also been covered by many artists, notably Rod Stewart (who had a chart hit with the song), Neil Young, and The Carpenters. Hardin is also known for his own recording career.

Hardin's jazz and blues-inflected folk-rock had a sad and fragile feel to it (he seems at times like an ragged cross between Leonard Cohen and an early Tim Buckley), but the songs themselves were sturdy pop vehicles with enough confessional touches to make them personal, and though other artists had the hits with cover versions ("Reason. to Believe" for Rod Stewart and "If I Were a Carpenter" for Bobby Darin are the two most obvious examples), nothing conveys the confusion and darkly romantic spirit at the center of these remarkable compositions like Hardin's own.

Tim Hardin 4 is an album by folk artist Tim Hardin, released in 1969. These early audition recordings done for Columbia in 1964 (which were ultimately rejected at that time) were not issued until 1969. The songs are in a straight blues style. A similar release was done by Atco on This is Tim Hardin the album holds some interest as a historical document.
