Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 2 The Age of Anxiety is a piece for orchestra and solo piano. The piece was composed from 1948 to 1949 in the US and Israel, and was revised in 1965. It is titled after W. H. Auden's poem of the same name, and dedicated to Serge Koussevitzky.

Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 1 Jeremiah was composed in 1942. Jeremiah is a programmatic work, following the Biblical story of the prophet Jeremiah. The third movement uses texts from the Book of Lamentations in the Hebrew Bible, sung by a mezzo-soprano. The work won the New York Music Critics' Circle Award for the best American work of 1944.

Symphony No. 1 "Jeremiah". Mezzo-soprano Vocals – Christa Ludwig. Bernstein, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Bernstein’s output with the Vienna Philharmonic is vast, but if you want a starting point, it’s Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. 3 & 4, an early ’90s album on Deutsche Grammophon, with Krystian Zimerman as soloist. 1 & 7, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in top form. For a survey of Bernstein’s own music, turn to the boxed set Bernstein: Marin Alsop’s Complete Naxos Recordings, released this year. Ms. Alsop, a Bernstein protégée, leads her Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in seven and a half hours of the major works, including the symphonies and Mass, as well as less frequently recorded ones, like the Chichester Psalms and an orchestral arrangement of the Anniversaries

Sir Colin Davis, London Symphony Chorus & London Symphony Orchestra Requiem Mass: II. Dies irae. Leonard Bernstein Messa da Requiem for Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra: II. Dies Irae: Lacrymosa dies illa. 1 in C minor, Op. 11, is a work by Felix Mendelssohn, which was completed on March 31, 1824, when the composer was only 15 years old. However, the autographed score was not published until 1831. The symphony was dedicated to the Royal Philharmonic Society, who performed the London première on May 25, 1829, with Mendelssohn conducting. Jeremiah is an American-Canadian television series starring Luke Perry and Malcolm-Jamal Warner that ran on the Showtime network from 2002 to 2004. The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic future wherein most of the adult population has been wiped out by a deadly virus. Developed by Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski and executive produced by Straczynski and Sam Egan, the series is loosely based on Belgian writer Hermann Huppen's comic book series, Jeremiah.

With his first symphony, Bernstein not only established himself as a major American symphonist, he began a musical and dramatic exploration of a theme that would continue to inspire many of his major works throughout his career. Bernstein decided to enter his Jeremiah Symphony into a competition organized by the New England Conservatory, for which his Tanglewood conducting mentor Serge Koussevitsky was serving as chairman of the jury. He made significant changes to his song sketch, shifting the vocal part to mezzo-soprano, and in a frantic burst of activity, he worked around the clock to complete the entire symphony before the December 31, 1942, deadline.
