Infidels is the 22nd studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on October 27, 1983 by Columbia Records. Produced by Mark Knopfler and Dylan himself, Infidels is seen as his return to secular music, following a conversion to Christianity, three evangelical, gospel records and a subsequent return to a less religious lifestyle.

Album · 1983 · 8 Songs. After a three-album foray into Christian music, Bob Dylan sounds rejuvenated on this 1983 powerhouse. While haunting biblical imagery peppers the aching pop of Jokerman, the rocking Neighborhood Bully details Israeli conflicts in the Middle East, and blues-charger Union Sundown scorns America’s outsourcing of jobs. Dylan’s heart opens on the love-addict’s ballad Don’t Fall Apart on Me Tonight, and Sweetheart Like You unfolds in bittersweet barroom pickup lines. His on-point band here includes Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler and heroic reggae rhythm section Sly Dunbar and Robbie.

Although I enjoyed Desire (1976) and even Slow Train Coming (1979), Bob Dylan didn't make another album equal to the greatness of Blood On The Tracks (1975) until 1983's Infidels. Co-produced with Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, his trademark sound comes across on this record. Him and Mick Taylor provide great guitar work while Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar give the album a reggae feel with their rhythm section. After a trilogy of Christian records, this was thought as more of a return to secular music as herd in "Neighborhood Bully.
Infidels (Bob Dylan album). While Dylan was known to be prolific and had numerous outtakes for most of his albums, Infidels in particular garnered considerable controversy over the years regarding its final selection of songs. By June 1983, Dylan and Knopfler had set a preliminary sequence of nine songs, including two songs that were ultimately omitted: "Foot of Pride" and "Blind Willie McTell".
