Previously unreleased tracks from the 1977-’78 recording sessions include long-missed studio versions of such live standards as Because the Night, Fire, and Springsteen’s most celebrated outtake, The Promise. Finished in some cases with modern vocals and additional instrumentation, they form a lost album between Born to Run and Darkness. Released: November 16, 2010.

The Promise is an album by Bruce Springsteen, released on November 16, 2010. It contains outtakes that did not make it onto Darkness on the Edge of Town. It also features modern vocals and additional instrumentation recorded in 2010. The album was also released as part of The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story box set. "Rendezvous" was originally released on Tracks and "The Promise" was originally released on 18 Tracks.

The Promise collects 21 unreleased songs written (and mostly) recorded between 1976 and 1978. They offer an aural view as to what might have been had Springsteen been able to record immediately after Born to Run. While some lyric themes here reflect the brokenness and hard choices found on Darkness, others are substantially more triumphant in their worldview; and musically, all the songs here contain more substantially production.

Bruce cranks the power pop dial up to 10 on this stage favourite. Not one of Springsteen’s most intricate songs, this paean to the promise of romance occasionally suffers from the nursery rhyme simplicity of the melody, making it sound like an out-take from The Partridge Family. Don’t think it’s beyond salvation, though, as Roy Bittan’s chiming piano manages to lend the throwaway ditty a smidgen of E Street gravitas.

Some of these songs were recorded by other artists, . Robert Gordon, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes and the title tune of this collection was actually a contender for Darkness but was left off due to interpretations being of the lawsuit between Springsteen and his former manager Mike Appel(Which wasn't the case really). Most of this album consists of unreleased songs and they are as good as anything The Boss released so many years ago.
