My Son John is a 1952 American drama film, directed by Leo McCarey, starring Robert Walker as a suspected Communist spy. The strongly anti-Communist film, produced during the height of McCarthyism, received an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story. The nomination was later viewed as a possible attempt by the motion picture industry to signal its loyalty to the anti-Communist campaign then underway.

John Hancock was born on January 23, 1737, in Braintree (present day city of Quincy), Massachusetts, to Mary Hawke and the senior John Hancock, who was a clergyman. The elder Hancock died when John was a child, and his mother took him and his siblings to live with in-laws in Lexington. She later sent John to live with Lydia and Thomas Hancock, his aunt and uncle. The two were warned by Paul Revere during his famous April 18, 1775 night ride shouting out that British forces were on their way. Hancock and Adams fled Lexington, where they were staying, and eventually made their way to Philadelphia. The Congress met in May, 1775.

The Shouting Matches saga might’ve ended there if Vernon hadn’t reconnected with Cook and Moen last year; that these good-natured jam sessions turned into an album speaks to the way Vernon’s fame automatically makes any project he’s involved in a commercial proposition, no matter how casual. Anyone approaching Grownass Man as a serious artistic statement on par with Bon Iver is bound to be disappointed; to the contrary, the album’s loose, lay-about approach offers an appealing contrast to Vernon’s fussed-over output with his primary band.
